Fishing at the Outer Banks

The trip to the Outer Banks was fun. We went and stayed at my friend Guy’s parent’s vacation house and we went deep sea fishing all day on Saturday aboard the Mugger {{popup IMG_2090.jpg IMG_2090 432×324}}IMG_2090… it’s really the only thing I got many pictures of while there. It was interesting…. we all got very sick, the waves were outrageous from all the storms, but we had fun fishing. Here I am very sick {{popup IMG_2149.jpg IMG_2149 432×324}}IMG_2149, although I only lost my lunch once (cannot say the same for Guy and Michelle – I think thy spent more time bent over the side than actually fishing). The waves were just too much. I even took motion sickness medicine (Bonine, which is supposed to be better than Dramomine). Well, it didn’t help (or maybe it did and I would have been worse). There are patches you can gt from the doctor – word to the wise – GET THEM AND LOVE THEM. Being sick for almost 8 hours in the middle of the ocean with no where to go is NOT FUN! Believe it or not, for as sick as we all got over the 8 hour period, we kept fishing.

Deep sea fishing is kinda funny though. It’s sorta cheating. The only thing you do is reel in for about 30 feet and then the first mate takes over. She bated the hook, pulled in our fish, and did most of the work {{popup IMG_2136.jpg IMG_2136 324×432}}IMG_2136 (fish is a fake albacore). She was one strong chick. Here’s picture of my prize catch {{popup IMG_2216.jpg IMG_2216 288×439}}IMG_2216… a King Mackerel. We also caught Spanish Mackerel and a Dolphin fish (Mahi Mahi). We caught 2 gar fish too {{popup obfishb.jpg obfishb 327×432}}obfishb, but you could not keep them (don’t know why but they are scary). Look at his teeth {{popup IMG_2171.jpg IMG_2171 324×432}}IMG_2171.

Here’s all of the ones we took home {{popup IMG_2214.jpg IMG_2214 360×476}}IMG_2214. Don’t pay any attention to the big ones though, because they are only bait fish (fake albacore). We paid to have our fish cleaned and we took them home and ate them {{popup IMG_2228.jpg IMG_2228 432×324}}IMG_2228. They were delicious! We especially liked the Mahi Mahi, but the Mackerel was good too. We think the Spanish was a little tastier than the King. We also did a crab boil the first night we were there, but since I took so many pictures of the crabs last time, I figured I would save the space on my camera card. Besides, we didn’t catch them. We threw out a few crab cages at the house on the last day and caught a dozen great sized blue crabs, but we decided we had our fill and didn’t have time to cook and eat them. We set them free.

I also got my butt kicked by the ocean the day we went to the beach. I imagine it was because of Katrina, but the waves on the beach kept knocking me over and tumbling me around. They were just too big to swim. I only wade up to my lower waist and they were knocking me down. I couldn’t make it more than 10 feet out into the ocean! I lost my only sunglasses in the ocean, which kinda made me mad, and got a nice burn on my back. But I still had fun and came back with quite a tan.

It was a good trip!

Wow, the first shot of that gar fish looks like a fake fish, like a huge lure. Weird.

Yeah, for some reason it would not go. We may have to go in and delete quite a few. I finally got one to work. Refresh and try again.
