Catnip is 10X as effective as DEET for mosquitoes

I got this from WOmsn’a Day Magazine….

“Mosquitoes are put off by this cat-pleasing herb. A 2001 Iowa State University study found that nepetalactone (an essential oil in catnip) was 10 times as effective as DEET, but had none of DEET’s harmful effects. Researchers are unsure why catnip works. “One theory is that it acts as an irritant,” says former Iowa State entomologist Chris Peterson, Ph.D., now a research entomologist with the USDA Forest Service. He says it only takes about one-tenth as much nepetalactone as DEET to have the same effect.”

I have no idea, but I was thinking either would work… Daddy said it will repell mosquitoes, but may bring kitties! UNLESS–BUFFETT gets ’em all… you go Buffett! I even thought that maybe you could put a ton of catnip in your mosquito spray and that might help…. I dunno.

Do you put it on you, or plant it around to keep them away in general?

I have some spray catnip at home for my cat, but she doesn’t care for it (it doesn’t even smell like catnip, so who knows). Anyway, you can buy spray catnip at the pet store and I have no idea if it works. I would like to test this, but I do not get many bugs near me. If anyone tests it and it works, let me know.
