Adventures in Sushi Making

I saw on an earlier post that Lala and Kris made sushi. I do not know what came over me yesterday, but I had the sudden urge to learn too (just the simple California rolls). I called my friend and she told me I could pick the stuff up at our local store. So I went and bought a bamboo rolling matt, rice vinegar, Nori seaweed paper, sushi rice, wasabi powder, imitation crab sticks, cucumber, and avocado {{popup IMG005.jpg IMG005 400×300}}IMG005… oh, and I stopped at Whole Foods for some seaweed salad (one of my favs).

It’s not as hard as I thought. I made the rice in my steamer, moved it to a glass dish, cooled it and poured on about 1 Tbsp. rice vinegar for each cup of rice. I took my nori seaweed paper, wet it with my hands, spread the very sticky rice, and placed some cucumber, avacado, and imitation crab along the edge {{popup IMG0095.jpg IMG0095 400×300}}IMG0095. Then you just roll it up {{popup IMG010.jpg IMG010 400×300}}IMG010 I thought I would have a hard time getting it to stay together, but really it did pretty good {{popup IMG011.jpg IMG011 400×300}}IMG011! I was not impressed with my wasabi powder and felt it was a little weak, so I may have to work on that one. Also, I found that my rolls were a little large and I would like them to be a little more bite-sized. I guess I just have to keep working on it.

I cannot say that I am that good at it, but it tasted pretty yummy. I was pretty proud of myself and I had fun learning something new.

I love it that you are not afraid to try things. They looked pretty good. Not one of my favorites but you did good. Hope you are having a good time in New Orleans.
